You can join People for Palmer Park at a Garden Party Fundraiser for the Log Cabin at Detroit's famed Frank Lloyd Wright Turkel Home in Detroit just north of Palmer Park!

The event will be held on Sunday, August 28 from 4-7 pm. The funds raised will go toward the restoration and preservation of the beautiful stained-leaded glass windows in Senator & Mrs. Palmer’s 1880’s Historic Log Cabin. Andrea Sevonty from Sevonty Restoration is an expert in the restoration and preservation of historic windows. At the fundraiser, Ms. Sevonty will demonstrate and discuss the art of stained glass repair that will be used to restore the Log Cabin windows.

Join PFPP at the Turkel home for a summer celebration with a silent auction, delicious food and wine and opportunity to view a portion of the magnificently restored Frank Lloyd Wright Turkel home.

Purchase your event tickets below.

Don't miss this opportunity to catch a rare glimpse inside another of Detroit's restored treasures and to help People for Palmer Park return the Log Cabin to its former beauty!

New Reflections Portal Sculpture at Palmer Park

11/30/2015

People for Palmer Park has a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving season!
One exciting new addition to Palmer Park located near the intersection of 7 Mile and Ponchartrain is a sculpture donated to us by John Rizzo, an artist/sculptor who is presently employed as the Wood Shop Manager at the College for Creative Studies. Known as the Reflections Portal, the sculpture stands 11’ high and 9’, and is constructed of hot rolled mild steel and mirror polished stainless steel. In the words of artist John Rizzo, “The gateway acts as a point of transformation for those passing through it to reinterpret the space that surrounds them, and to heighten their perception of things normally unnoticed.”

To enhance the experience, People for Palmer Park commissioned a gravel pathway through the portal. Special thanks to Mr. Rizzo, the city of Detroit for their support in moving, storing and installing the structure, and to Michigan Recreational Construction for their installation work, and for Joiner Construction for building the gravel pathway.
We hope this is the beginning of a true sculpture garden in Palmer Park!

Thursday, June 25th at Lola's on the Avenue
Arrive 6:00-6:30pm, pitches start promptly at 7:00pm.
Cost only $5 to attend/eat/vote!

Magic of Art in Palmer Park (MAPP) - artist-led creative workshops - has been selected as one of only two projects that will pitch at Livernois SOUP.

Detroit SOUP is a microgranting dinner celebrating and supporting creative projects in Detroit. For a donation $5 attendees receive soup, salad, bread and a vote and hear from presentations ranging from art, urban agriculture, social justice, social entrepreneurs, education, technology and more. Each presenter has four minutes to share their idea and answer four questions from the audience. At the event, attendees eat, talk, share resources, enjoy art and vote on the project they think benefits the city the most. At the end of the night, we count the ballots and the winner goes home with all of the money raised to carry out their project. Winners come back to a future SOUP dinner to report their project’s progress.

We need your support!

MAPP is proud to be one of only two presenters tomorrow night, so we're hoping you'll join us and show your support for our artist led workshops in Palmer Park!

We know Palmer Park inspires walkers and bikers and gardeners. Now it will inspire the creativity of visitors young and old with a series of free artist-led workshops geared toward sparking the magic and artistic spirit within us all.

Our new program, Magic of Art in Palmer Park (MAPP), is funded by a Community Development Advocates of Detroit (CDAD) placemaking grant to People for Palmer Park (PFPP). It extends a small tantalizing portion of the to the summer and fall seasons and will help identify Palmer Park on the 'MAPP' as a place for creating and enjoying art in the park.

Our first workshop is scheduled for Sunday, June 21 from 2- 4 pm near the urban gardens.
Register for this event and reserve your spot on our Facebook event:
https://www.facebook.com/events/519772801514118/
It’s called Summer Solstice  Eco-Dying with Mandisa Smith, who is the co-owner of Detroit Fiber Works in Detroit. Using natural dyes and materials, participants (of all ages and skill levels) will learn how to create beautiful designs on individual silk squares, as well as work on a group project of a larger fabric mural to exhibit in the park.

Stay updated on the MAPP Program on their own page here on the People for Palmer Park website.
