The folks at People for Palmer Park are so eager to see your smiling faces in the education garden this year. Most of the produce grown in the garden is given back to our wonderful volunteers who help maintain the space so join us in the gardens, lend a hand, and enjoy the harvest!
Our amazing volunteers from Home Depot return once again this year to kick off volunteer days and to help us build even more raised beds, a compost station and a greenhouse. You'll see this activity May 20th and May 21st at the garden, and anyone is welcome to join in!
Also, our first Spring into Action Recreation Fair will be taking place on May 21 near the Garden as well, so there will be much activity in every direction at the Park! We hope you'll find ways to to help us work in the Park AND stay healthy and happy this summer!
We will have regularly scheduled volunteer time slots after that every Tuesday from 10am-1pm, Thursday from 4pm-7pm and Saturdays from 10am-1pm. No experience is necessary and anyone can participate in the garden (adults, seniors, teens, young children), so help spread the word about the garden and tell your friends, neighbors and family!
May is a busy garden month so when you come to the garden you can expect to work on any of these tasks:
- Seed cold weather crops of root vegetables, peas, greens, etc.
- Thin seedlings
- Spread compost
- Spread mulch
- Transplant/seed hot weather crops of peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, etc.
- Harvest cold weather crops
- Weed beds
Also, we are happy to continue FREE education classes throughout the season.
Join us May 28th from 11 am- 12 pm for an Introduction to Growing Vegetables: Soil Basics and Garden Layouts. Are you new to growing food? This class is for you! Do you have experience growing food? This class is a chance for you to share some of your experiences with others! Email Lindsay at [email protected] to sign up.
