Urban Garden Volunteer Days to Start 5/29-5/30

Join People for Palmer Park to launch our 2015 urban garden on Friday & Saturday, May 29-30th. Volunteers may show up any time between 9:00 am and 2:00 pm both days!

  • We will be working alongside of volunteers from Home Depot, who has generously funded the project 
  • We will planting vegetables, herbs and more in 10 raised beds
  • Four new raised beds will be built and filled with sand, stone, compost, and vegetable and herb transplants.
  • We will be planting/mulching 200-300 pumpkins and adding popcorn plants.
  • A rain barrel will be constructed in steps over the weekend- Roy Raines will be doing a short demonstration about the structure on Saturday at 10:00 AM.
  • We will be planting the beginnings of a children’s’ herb garden

Volunteers should meet in the garden area and bring their favorite pair of gloves and hand trowel. We will provide additional gloves, tools, water and a small lunch.

19th Annual Kids Fishing Derby at Palmer Park

THIS SATURDAY, May 16, 2015 at Lake Frances in Palmer Park!

This annual Detroit spring tradition presented by Hook, Line & Sinker, Inc. and the City of Detroit Recreation Department continues for its 19th year. Boys and Girls ages 7-14 are invited for fishing, fun, prizes and gifts! This is a FREE contest, open to the public, but you must register and furnish all of your fishing equipment. Participants must be accompanied by an adult.

There will be a morning session...
Registration 9:00am, Derby Time 10:00-11:30am;

...and an afternoon session...
Registration 12:00 noon, Derby Time 1:00-2:30pm

Celebrate World Lindy Hop Day at Palmer Park with FREE Swing Dance lessons on Saturday, May 23, from 1-3pm

Artspectrum/A Company of Dancers and People for Palmer Park have teamed up to present a free beginner swing dance class in honor of the World Lindy Hop Day Weekend Observance. Paulette Brockington will teach the class and provide music for dancing afterward in the parking lot adjacent to Palmer Park's Splash Park on Merrill Pleasance between W. McNichols and 7 Mile Rds in Detroit.
