Missing those annual summer art fairs in Michigan this year?
The new Michigan Holiday Art Fair shares the delights and creative finds of a summer art fair ONLINE this holiday season! It gives you the opportunity to buy gifts from artists who would have normally sold creative work at six Michigan art fairs.

Buy gifts this year (or something for yourself!) from nearly 60 artists and check out just once in the online cashier.

Artist demonstrations, virtual studio tours and art activities will take place nightly (daily on the weekend dates). Santa and Mrs. Claus and local musicians will pop in online too.

Each date between December 1-6, a portion of all sales will benefit one of 6 Detroit area nonprofits. People for Palmer Park day is Saturday, Dec. 5th so we hope you'll shop that day to support us AND some amazing artists.

People for Palmer Park announces that it is a proud Community Partner for the upcoming 2019 Rocket Mortgage Classic, and we join the City of Detroit in welcoming the PGA Tour to the historic Detroit Golf Club for the first time, June 24-30, 2019.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES DURING THE TOURNAMENT

As a backdrop, volunteers are an integral part of the operations of all PGA Tour events. More than 100,000 volunteers annually contribute countless hours helping orchestrate more than 120 tournaments in all aspects from admissions and guest services to marshals and scoring.

Summer in the City volunteers bring their creativity and energy to beautify Palmer Park

8/2/2017

 Our orchards have been mulched.
Our butterfly garden has a lot less weeds.
Our new Community House "circles mural" is brighter.
Our garden is free of trash.
And we have 2 new beautiful murals in progress on the former handball courts at Palmer Park thanks to the amazing young volunteers at Summer in the City !

Pictured are the kids representing Huntington Woods Fruit Camp (burgundy shirts) and the kids from Digitas (blue shirts) who worked on the orchards and gardens. These kids did an EXTRAORDINARY amount of hard work in one day. We are so amazed at the impact this had on the Park!

Additionally, Project Paint volunteers from Summer in the City touched up the colorful circles mural on our community house (next to splash park) and others are working hard on completing their bright murals on the former handball courts (behind the tennis courts).

We are so happy to continue our partnership with this amazing group and hope you'll help support their efforts! (more info below photos)
Summer in the City strives to improve and expand community service in Metro Detroit. By bringing a diverse group of young people together to invest their energy in Detroit, Summer in the City programs address the immediate needs of city neighborhoods and foster a regional mindset.

The eight week summer program is the heart of Summer in the City. From June 21 to August 12, our unmistakable t-shirts can be seen all around Metro Detroit. Working alongside Summer in the City's invaluable Crew, volunteers can Paint murals around the city, Plant in community and urban gardens, or Play with neighborhood children at any of our youth enrichment sites.

Summer in the City has painted over 100 murals across the city of Detroit. Each summer we partner with neighborhood organizations, block clubs, businesses, and the City to identify high-impact locations for our murals. We then work with these and other partner organizations to develop designs for each of the sites, be they designs created by SITC staff members or designs selected by the partner organizations. While our Project Paint leaders work year-round, the majority of the painting happens during our summer schedule with our volunteers.

New Reflections Portal Sculpture at Palmer Park

11/30/2015

Picture
People for Palmer Park has a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving season!
One exciting new addition to Palmer Park located near the intersection of 7 Mile and Ponchartrain is a sculpture donated to us by John Rizzo, an artist/sculptor who is presently employed as the Wood Shop Manager at the College for Creative Studies. Known as the Reflections Portal, the sculpture stands 11’ high and 9’, and is constructed of hot rolled mild steel and mirror polished stainless steel. In the words of artist John Rizzo, “The gateway acts as a point of transformation for those passing through it to reinterpret the space that surrounds them, and to heighten their perception of things normally unnoticed.”

To enhance the experience, People for Palmer Park commissioned a gravel pathway through the portal. Special thanks to Mr. Rizzo, the city of Detroit for their support in moving, storing and installing the structure, and to Michigan Recreational Construction for their installation work, and for Joiner Construction for building the gravel pathway.
We hope this is the beginning of a true sculpture garden in Palmer Park!

MAPP to pitch at Livernois SOUP 6/25!

Thursday, June 25th at Lola's on the Avenue
Arrive 6:00-6:30pm, pitches start promptly at 7:00pm.
Cost only $5 to attend/eat/vote!

Magic of Art in Palmer Park (MAPP) - artist-led creative workshops - has been selected as one of only two projects that will pitch at Livernois SOUP.

Detroit SOUP is a microgranting dinner celebrating and supporting creative projects in Detroit. For a donation $5 attendees receive soup, salad, bread and a vote and hear from presentations ranging from art, urban agriculture, social justice, social entrepreneurs, education, technology and more. Each presenter has four minutes to share their idea and answer four questions from the audience. At the event, attendees eat, talk, share resources, enjoy art and vote on the project they think benefits the city the most. At the end of the night, we count the ballots and the winner goes home with all of the money raised to carry out their project. Winners come back to a future SOUP dinner to report their project’s progress.

We need your support!

MAPP is proud to be one of only two presenters tomorrow night, so we're hoping you'll join us and show your support for our artist led workshops in Palmer Park!
