Our sympathy to the family and friends of Officer Joe Abdella of the Detroit Mounted Police. He was extended family to People for Palmer Park. He suffered a massive heart attack and died at the Mounted Police offices on Friday 8/14. Sergeant Abdella has been an incredible support to People for Palmer Park and we are greatly saddened by his death and keeping the Abdella family in our thoughts. He brought great joy at our recent Log Cabin Day and will be missed by many.

Visitation services are Monday and Tuesday evening and funeral service is on Wednesday.

You can join People for Palmer Park at a Garden Party Fundraiser for the Log Cabin at Detroit's famed Frank Lloyd Wright Turkel Home in Detroit just north of Palmer Park!

The event will be held on Sunday, August 23 from 4-7 pm. The funds raised will go toward the restoration and preservation of the beautiful stained-leaded glass windows in Senator & Mrs. Palmer’s 1880’s Historic Log Cabin. Andrea Sevonty from Sevonty Restoration is an expert in the restoration and preservation of historic windows. At the fundraiser, Ms. Sevonty will demonstrate and discuss the art of stained glass repair that will be used to restore the Log Cabin windows.

Join PFPP at the Turkel home for a summer celebration with a silent auction, delicious food and wine and opportunity to view a portion of the magnificently restored Frank Lloyd Wright Turkel home. Visit logcabinparty.eventbrite.com to purchase tickets or to make a donation to the Log Cabin restoration campaign.

Don't miss this opportunity to catch a rare glimpse inside another of Detroit's restored treasures and to help People for Palmer Park return the Log Cabin to its former beauty!

This Week's Garden Update (8/8/15)

Welcome, August! The harvest is in full swing and I find myself astonished that the summer is racing by. Let's revel in all of the summer glory together in the garden! Volunteer hours are from 10 am- 1 pm every Saturday and we could use your help.

Don't miss out on the education opportunity in the apple orchards on Saturday, August 22nd from 1:00 pm- 3:00 pm. Keep Growing Detroit is partnering with People for Palmer Park to demonstrate the many apple products you can make- including sauce, cider, vinegar and more! Classes are $3 for Garden Resource Program members and $5 for non members.

Some of the tasks we will be working on in the garden now include:
  • Weeding the pumpkin patch, raised beds and pathways.
  • Spreading mulch around the raised beds.
  • Deadheading flowers.
  • Monitoring and treating pests (cabbage worms, aphids, cucumber beetle, japanese beetle, potato beetle, etc.)
  • Seeding and transplanting various veggies, including our cold crops like broccoli and kale.
  • Staking and pruning tomatoes.
  • Harvesting beans, eggplant, tomatoes, peppers, greens, radishes, carrots and more!
  • Trash pickup.

Contact: Lindsay Page, lindsay.d.page@gmail.com or 248.444.8883 for more information!

NOTE: Many of these to-dos are very kid-friendly. Also, great community service work for teens. Now that school's out, why not set aside a little time together and volunteer an hour or two? We'd just love to meet some new folks who like to get their hands dirty, who love being outdoors and who love Palmer Park! Remember, those who volunteer can share in its harvest!

On Wednesday, August 12, Police Officer Danielle Woods (LGBT Liason), Public Safety Foundation, Detroit Recreation Department and the Detroit Police Department are hosting an LGBT Community Chat at 6:00 pm in Palmer Park.

The Chief of Police will be in attendance along with investigators from the Major Crimes Division/SVU (Special Victims Unit).

Officer Woods' primary objective is to spread awareness, offer program assistance, and relay the support of the police department to the LGBT community. This "chat" will be a relaxed but controlled session to basically address areas of concern and Q&A for the department. A productive and trustworthy event with a positive outcome is what she is aiming for.

LOCATION: Near Lake Frances
