YOUTH DISC GOLF
Wednesdays 5-6pm
June 25 - August 27, 2025

LOCATION: Class meets behind the Community House at the 1st tee pad for the Jr. Disc Golf Course

With the growing popularity of disc golf and the installation of the Jr. Disc Golf Course at Palmer Park, we are excited to introduce FREE YOUTH DISC GOLF instruction. Disc golf—also referred to as frisbee golf—is a low impact sport for all skill levels.  We encourage girls and boys to come out and learn how to play this fun sport.

Made possible with support from Paul McBeth Foundation.

UPDATES ON CHANGES TO THE DISC GOLF COURSE AT PALMER PARK (3/17/2024)

Palmer Park's 18-hold disc golf course is temporarily suspending play for baskets 6, 7 & 8 during the parks Bandshell construction.
We apologize for this inconvenience but due to safety reasons, we must avoid this area. We are working to provide an alternative course of play and will keep updates on our social media sites
.

What does this mean for you?
The basket for Hole 6 was removed this past week, and holes 7 an 8 will be pulled this evening. If you're playing the course, you'll either need to walk from 5 to 9, play 9 through 5, or walk from 5 to 12/13. This results in only 15 holes being available on a temporary basis.

Where do we go from here?
The good news is that we have an alternative design that we are working to finalize for approval from the City, and if that is approved we feel that the course will actually be enhanced in both challenge and diversity of play, and will again offer a contiguous 18 holes of play.

Thank you for your understanding.

EXCITING DISC GOLF NEWS AT PALMER PARK (7/26/2023)
Palmer Park is home to Detroit's only 18-hole disc golf course and thanks to a grant from the Paul McBeth Foundation, in partnership with Discraft, an initiative aimed at introducing disc golf to the underserved urban community, we will soon see a new beginners course introduce at Palmer to bring this sport to new players.

In 2020, members of the disc golf community expressed spirited interest in creating an 18 hole course at the south end of Palmer Park, close to where the former back nine of the public course was once located.

Chris McTaggart, lead for the Palmer Park Disc Golf Course was invited to make a presentation at the May 2020 PFPP Board meeting to convince our organization that this was a worthwhile cause we could support and advocate to the City of Detroit. They even hosted a successful Field Day July 31, 2021 to demonstrate the sport and build interest in the community.

We are excited to announce that after many months of planning, fundraising by the disc golf supporters, course adjustments with the City due to the future placement of the historic State Fairgrounds' bandshell and many volunteer hours to install the baskets and prepare the area, the Palmer Park Disc Golf Course is now officially in place.

On December 3, 2021, 18 disc golf baskets, temporary signage and temporary natural tee boxes were installed and play began for many eager groups over the weekend. Formal tees will be installed in concrete by the summer of 2022.

WHAT IS DISC GOLF?
Disc golf is played much like golf. Instead of a ball and clubs, though, players use a flying disc or Frisbee®. The sport was formalized in the 1970s and shares with golf the object of completing each hole in the fewest strokes (or, in the case of disc golf, fewest throws).
A golf disc is thrown from a tee area to a target, which is the "hole." The hole can be one of a number of disc golf targets; the most common is an elevated metal basket. As a player progresses down the fairway, he or she must make each consecutive throw from the spot where the previous throw landed. The trees, shrubs, and terrain changes located in and around the fairways provide challenging obstacles for the golfer. Finally, the "putt" lands in the basket and the hole is completed. (1)
