Because we have so many cycling enthusiasts in our People for Palmer Park community, we want to let you know about an exciting event coming up that includes Palmer Park.

NSO Handlebars for the Homeless (H4H) is a fundraising event benefiting NSO's programs and services.

H4H is a relaxing 16-mile guided tour through some of Detroit's beautiful neighborhoods, parks and other Detroit gems. Novice and experienced cyclists will both enjoy this scenic tour including planned stops at key points of interest.

All participants will receive a NSO H4H high-performance T-shirt as well as morning refreshments, light lunch, an after-ride Yoga stretch with Detroit Yoga Community and a chance to win a new bike from Detroit Bikes.  SAG (Support & Gear) Support will be available throughout the tour.

The tour will begin and end at the NSO Bell Building on Oakman Blvd.  This historic building (the former Michigan Bell Building) has been renovated to provide permanent supportive housing for formerly homeless adults and house NSO's Corporate Offices.

Please visit this event for more information and to register for the ride!

This Week's Garden Update (7/1/2015)

7/2/2015

Happy July!
The garden vegetables (and weeds!) have been exploding because of all the wonderful rain. The tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, beans and pumpkins are forming beautiful flowers and will soon be juicy, tasty treats! Saturday volunteer hours are still standing from 10 am- 1pm for the rest of the summer-although I will not be there July 4th or July 18th due to previous commitments. Remember that any length of time you can spend in the garden tending to the daily garden tasks means you get to share in the generous bounty!

Some of the tasks that need to be completed include:

  • Continuing to weed the orchards, pumpkin patch and garden pathways
  • Spreading sand and then mulch underneath the rain water collection system
  • Deadheading flowers
  • Monitoring and treating pests (cabbage worms, aphids, Colorado potato beetle, cucumber beetle)
  • Continuing to move the benches from the pool house to the garden
  • Seeding greens
  • Staking and pruning tomatoes
  • Trash pickup

Veggies that are ready to harvest include:

Kale, swiss chard, spinach, collards, broccoli, turnips, herbs and more!

A HUGE thank you to all of those who continue to be engaged in the garden every week... your dedication is inspiring.

Contact Lindsay Page at lindsay.d.page@gmail.com or 248-444-8883 with any questions.
Looking forward to seeing your smiling faces soon!
