This Week's Garden Update (7/1/2015)

Happy July!
The garden vegetables (and weeds!) have been exploding because of all the wonderful rain. The tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, beans and pumpkins are forming beautiful flowers and will soon be juicy, tasty treats! Saturday volunteer hours are still standing from 10 am- 1pm for the rest of the summer-although I will not be there July 4th or July 18th due to previous commitments. Remember that any length of time you can spend in the garden tending to the daily garden tasks means you get to share in the generous bounty!

Some of the tasks that need to be completed include:

  • Continuing to weed the orchards, pumpkin patch and garden pathways
  • Spreading sand and then mulch underneath the rain water collection system
  • Deadheading flowers
  • Monitoring and treating pests (cabbage worms, aphids, Colorado potato beetle, cucumber beetle)
  • Continuing to move the benches from the pool house to the garden
  • Seeding greens
  • Staking and pruning tomatoes
  • Trash pickup

Veggies that are ready to harvest include:

Kale, swiss chard, spinach, collards, broccoli, turnips, herbs and more!

A HUGE thank you to all of those who continue to be engaged in the garden every week... your dedication is inspiring.

Contact Lindsay Page at [email protected] or 248-444-8883 with any questions.
Looking forward to seeing your smiling faces soon!

Hello Gardening Friends!
Our Farm & Community Manager, Lindsay Page provided us with this update today. Here's what's happening in the garden and where we need your help:

  • Weeding the orchards, pumpkin patch and garden pathways
  • Spreading sand and then mulch underneath the rain water collection system
  • Deadheading flowers
  • Monitoring for pests
  • Moving the benches from the pool house to the garden
  • Harvesting radishes, kale, baby swiss chard, arugula, spinach, collards, herbs & more
  • Thinning beets
  • Seeding new greens and flowers
  • Staking and pruning tomatoes
  • Trash pickup

NOTE: Many of these to-dos are very kid-friendly. Also, great community service work for teens. Now that school's out, why not set aside a little time together and volunteer an hour or two? We'd just love to meet some new folks who like to get their hands dirty, who love being outdoors and who love Palmer Park! Remember, those who volunteer can share in it's harvest!

The Urban Educational Garden is located near the Splash Park parking lot on Merrill Plaisance. Look for the raised beds and rain collection system!

P.S. Come check out our new friend beginning its transformation into a butterfly!

Join us if you can! Wed. 6/3 10am-1pm
Weather looking great!

Although much was accomplished, there is a bit more that needs to be done due to our rain delays over last weekend. If you're able, Wed. morning 6/3 is a makeup morning 10am-1pm. We'll be planting all pumpkin plants and the sensory garden, and finishing the rain collection system.
Hope you can make it!

Join People for Palmer Park to launch our 2015 urban garden on Friday & Saturday, May 29-30th. Volunteers may show up any time between 9:00 am and 2:00 pm both days!

  • We will be working alongside of volunteers from Home Depot, who has generously funded the project
  • We will planting vegetables, herbs and more in 10 raised beds
  • Four new raised beds will be built and filled with sand, stone, compost, and vegetable and herb transplants.
  • We will be planting/mulching 200-300 pumpkins and adding popcorn plants.
  • A rain barrel will be constructed in steps over the weekend- Roy Raines will be doing a short demonstration about the structure on Saturday at 10:00 AM.
  • We will be planting the beginnings of a children’s’ herb garden

Volunteers should meet in the garden area and bring their favorite pair of gloves and hand trowel. We will provide additional gloves, tools, water and a small lunch.
