19th Annual Kids Fishing Derby at Palmer Park

THIS SATURDAY, May 16, 2015 at Lake Frances in Palmer Park!

This annual Detroit spring tradition presented by Hook, Line & Sinker, Inc. and the City of Detroit Recreation Department continues for its 19th year. Boys and Girls ages 7-14 are invited for fishing, fun, prizes and gifts! This is a FREE contest, open to the public, but you must register and furnish all of your fishing equipment. Participants must be accompanied by an adult.

There will be a morning session...
Registration 9:00am, Derby Time 10:00-11:30am;

...and an afternoon session...
Registration 12:00 noon, Derby Time 1:00-2:30pm

Hi Nathan!
This is actually the post for last year's Fishing Derby. This isn't one of our events and we haven't had any word on one this year, sorry!

But we ARE having our first Recreation Fair THIS SATURDAY 9am-3pm near the splash park. All of our recreation instructors on hand on same day to demo their FREE weekly classes and answer questions. Our Urban Garden Volunteer Days are kicking off too right next to the Fair where any one, any age can help us get the garden ready for growing season. We hope you'll bring the kids by!

Is the water stocked with trout/another type of fish for this derby, and is there one in 2016, or no? Thanks.

Hi Celeste!
Since Lake Frances is in the early stages of restoration and at this time not even full enough for fish since it was drained and dredged, it's highly unlikely there will be a Fishing Derby this year. It will be up to the City whether the derby continues after the shoreline/islands are naturalized with new plantings later this summer. --Amy
