Small steps can prevent diabetes.
Becoming more active and losing a moderate amount of weight can help you change your risk of diabetes. The Diabetes Prevention Program will help you take steps to prevent type 2 diabetes.

Having a parent or sibling with type 2 diabetes increases your risk for also having diabetes. If you think you’re at risk or have been told by a doctor that you have prediabetes, consider joining the Diabetes Prevention Center’s Diabetes Prevention Program at Palmer Park!

Participants will be a part of a small, supportive group led by a trained lifestyle coach. You’ll learn about healthier eating habits, ways to be more physically active and other behavior changes over the course of 16 weekly one-hour sessions. The group will continue meeting monthly, completing a full year of the Diabetes Prevention Program.

This program will be offered at no cost to participants, but we are requesting participation in a research study. Attend the information session to learn more.

To learn more about this life-changing program, attend the information session on Wednesday, July 10, from 10-11 a.m. at Palmer Park Community House.
The first session of the workshop begins Wednesday, July 17, at the same time and location.

To register or for more information, visit ReadySetPrevent.org or call 800-482-1455.

Handball Workshops in the works for May 2019 at Palmer Park

The People for Palmer Park are helping put together the first of what is hoped will be MANY free handball workshops at the newly renovated Palmer Park Handball Courts.

The historic courts reopened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on October 13, 2018. Passionate members of the Michigan Handball Association from the surrounding communities worked diligently for many months prior to raise the funds needed to get the courts back to a playable state after many years of neglect. These players in turn partnered with PFPP and the City of Detroit and its Parks & Recreation department to bring these courts to a whole new generation of handball enthusiasts.

The group together with PFPP Recreation committee is looking to hold
FREE 4-week introductory Spring workshops 5/18-6/8/2019:

Kids aged 12 & up Saturdays
10-11am
Adults Saturdays
12-1pm

To help us gauge interest, please send an email if interested--along with any questions or suggestions-- to Stewart Shevin at sshevin@comcast.net.

City seeks community input in public Joe Louis Greenway Project meetings at Palmer Park

Saturday, January 19th, 2019
at the Palmer Park Community House
11am-1pm and 2-4pm

Come share your thoughts on a future walking and biking route crossing 31.5 miles of Detroit and let the city know how to make this greenway work for you! Get involved in the preliminary stages of the Joe Louis Greenway by viewing the finalists’ proposals for the planning framework and participating in a Q&A with the city officials and consulting firms behind its development. The meeting will be at the Palmer Park Community House from 11 am - 1 pm and again from 2 - 4 pm

The Joe Louis Greenway (JLG), named after Detroit boxing legend, will be a new 31.5-mile recreational pathway connecting neighborhoods across the city and to the rest of the region. The Greenway' project will be a combination of new infrastructure and links to existing but disjointed trails, ultimately providing a safe and efficient loop around the city, with connections from 8 Mile all the way to the Detroit Riverfront, all without a car. The greenway is expected to stabilize neighborhoods, create jobs, support transportation, and create new spaces for play citywide. This will be a greenway for every Detroiter.

The Palmer Park Community House is the colorful painted building next to the Splash Pad at the split of Merrill Plaisance and Pontchartrain.

Facebook page for JLG - https://www.facebook.com/JoeLouisGreenway/

Meetings are also set up as events on our Facebook page so it's easier to invite community -

Construction begins on Palmer Park Tennis Courts

The long anticipated reconstruction of the Palmer Park Tennis Courts has begun!

According to People for Palmer Park Board member and Palmer Park Tennis Academy Director, Leonora King, the process begins with tearing up the cement and then letting the area rest over the winter. Asphalt can be put down sometime in April 2019 and the top playing surface laid sometime in May 2019.

"All of this is done to extend the longevity of the courts," King said.

A total of nine new courts will include six junior courts for the kids and one bank of courts marked for pickle ball players. Additional improvements will include new fencing, benches, nets and windscreens.

Reconstruction of the Palmer Park Tennis Courts by the City of Detroit is made possible in part by a grant from the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation.

Completion of the Tennis Courts project set for May 30, 2019

The Sierra Club and Friends of the Rouge will present a workshop on Rain Gardens, why they are so important to the environment to prevent storm water damage and flooding, and how to build one. Following the workshop, we will actually install the garden at the corner of Woodward and Merrill Plaisance next to the historic building (that we believe was once a power station of some sort). Please come help dig and plant. RSVP info is below, please sign up and and share this invitation since we need at least 15 people for the installation.

The Rain Garden Workshops include presentations, demonstrations, and resources to equip you with the skills to create and care for your own rain garden!

Learn how rain gardens and other stormwater management practices help non-profit and faith-based organizations and small businesses reduce drainage costs.

Building a rain garden can help to:
  • Reduce stormwater runoff and pollution into the Detroit and Rouge Rivers
  • Create a healthier community
  • Provide habitat for birds, bees and butterflies
  • Protect you property from flooding

PLEASE RSVP at 313-444-3705,
or email erma.leaphart@sierraclub.org
or Barbara@peopleforpalmerpark.org

WORKSHOP: 2pm at the Palmer Park Community House.
The Community House is next to the Splash Park at Merrill Plaisance and Pontchartrain (with the bright painted circles).

GARDEN INSTALLATION: 3-6pm at the SE entrance to Palmer Park
The SE entrance is at Woodward and Merrill Plaisance.

Grand Re-Opening of Historic Palmer Park Handball Courts set for 10/6

9/28/2018

A group of area handball enthusiasts have been working with great determination over the summer to raise the significant funds needed to restore the historic Palmer Park handball courts, and they are now ready for play.

The Palmer Park Handball Courts, commissioned in 1950, hosted many national handball championships and racquetball matches including the U.S. Handball Association National Three-Wall Championship from 1950-1972. The refurbished facility will allow great play, but will also provide a place for current handball and racquetball players  to "play the game forward." Workshops for young Detroiters will introduce them to a game that builds skills and character.

Funds were raised for painting, tuck-pointing, sports fence, court surface refinishing, and area beautification and the City of Detroit and People for Palmer Park lent their support

On Saturday, October 6, 2018 from 12:00 to 1:00pm, we are holding an opening celebration/press conference to announce the restoration of the Palmer Park Handball Courts. There will be handball demonstrations, refreshments, and hopefully have some young people to teach.

ALL ARE INVITED!

Parking will be located near the SE entrance of the park, in the Chess Row lot. No parking will be allowed next to the courts themselves. Look for signs.
